Blue Flower Seeds for Bees

These are some of the best early flowering annuals which provide nectar and pollen for Bees. This collection contains three packets of seeds: Cerinthe major 'Purpurascens', Salvia viridis 'Oxford Blue' and Borage 'Blue'

  • Commonly known as Honeywort, Cerinthe is an early flowering hardy annual with glaucous foliage and deep purple bell-like flowers. Cerinthe is good in the garden and excellent for cutting providing both flowers and foliage.
  • Blue Blorage is an early flowering hardy annual with beautiful clear blue starry flowers. Borage flowers are edible and can be frozen in ice cubes to add to Pimms and other refrehing summer drinks.
  • Salvia viridis 'Oxford Blue' is an exceptionally long flowering annual with deep blue almost purple bracts produced on sturdy plants. Commonly known as Clary Sage it is easy to grow, produces masses of flowers and is good for cutting and drying.

Sow this trio in spring for summer flowers then again in autumn for early flowers next year.

Sow Seeds Easy to grow. Sow indoors in March/April, direct from May onwards and again in August/September for bigger plants and earlier flowers next year.
Thin/Plant Out Allow 30/45cm (12-/18 inches) between plants.
Conditions Required Prefers well drained soil in full sun/part shade. Keep picking and dead heading to encourage new flowers. Provide support for Borage and Cerinthe or their stems will bend.
Flower Production Takes 12-14 weeks to flower from a spring sowing. Flowers May to September.
Picking Pick flowers early in the morning, remove lower leaves and stand them in deep water for a few hours before arranging. Sear stem ends in boiling water for 30 seconds to help water uptake. Lasts 7-10 days in a vase.
Planting Combinations This trio are some of the best annual plants you can grow for bees and butterflies. They look great with other blue flowers. They grow particularly well with Marigolds (Calendula officinalis) and Feverfew which are also brilliant for wildlife.
