News July 2021

July is a great time to sow all sorts of flower seeds. This is a great month to sow Biennials such as Forget-me-Nots, Wallflowers and Sweet William for early flowering next Spring. You can carry on sowing Perennials and Wildflowers in July too. You can also sow quick growing Hardy Annuals such as Poppies and some Half Hardy Annuals such as Sunflowers. Get them going now and they’ll go on flowering until the winter cold sets in and the frost arrives.
There are so many lovely flowers to grow now. Do feel free to have a browse if you’d like some inspiration. You’ll find growing information for each flower here in the shop too.

Clarkia amoena 'Double Mixed' Seeds

Clarkia 'Double Mixed' is an extremely hardy annual with long stems of gorgeous flowers in shades of rose pink, red and white. It is easy to grow and is good for cut flowers too. Every bud will open in the vase. Sow direct where you want flowers to bloom in spring then sow again in autumn. An autumn sowing will produce early flowers the following year.

Often called the Butterfly Flower, Clarkia is loved by Butterflies and Moths so is great in a wildlife garden. They are really easy and rewarding to grow so perfect seeds for children to sow.

Height & Spread 60 cm tall x 30cm wide (18 inches tall x 12 inches)
Sow Seeds Sow outdoors in autumn then again in spring for maximum
flower production. Clarkia plants are very cold tolerant.
Thin/Plant Out Allow 30cm (12 inches) between plants.
Conditions Required Prefers moist but well drained soil in full sun.
Water thoroughly in dry spells.
Flower Production Beautiful long stems of richly coloured flowers produced from May to October.
Picking Pick Clarkia early in the morning, strip the leaves and stand them in deep water for a few hours before arranging. Lasts 10 days in a vase.
Planting Combinations Clarkia is one of the easiest and most stunning annual flowers you can grow. If you are growing flowers for Butterflies you may also like Wildflowers, Cosmos, Verbena and Dahlias.
