Cosmos 'Purity' & Ammi majus Seeds

Purity is a lovely tall Cosmos growing to 1m/3 feet or more so it’s brilliant for adding height to your borders or cut flower patch. With feathery apple green foliage and large white daisy like flowers Purity is a stunner.

Cosmos are originally from Mexico and South America where they flower year round. Here in the UK Cosmos will flower all summer and go on flowering right up until the first frosts. All Cosmos flowers are brilliant for cutting and they will last well over a week in fresh water. The more flowers you cut the more the plants produce. They are amazingly productive plants and what's more our bees and butterflies love Cosmos too!

Ammi majus is one of our tallest hardy annuals with long strong stems, lacy white flower heads and dark green feathery foliage. Commonly known as Queen Anne' Lace or Bishop's Weed Ammi is good for adding height to borders, for cut flower production and attracts pollinating insects too. In fact it's such a great plant that the RHS have awarded it the AGM (Award of Garden Merit)

Genus Two packets of seeds: Cosmos bipinnatus 'Purity' and Ammi majus
Common names Mexican Aster and Queen Anne's Lace
Plant Type Annual Flowers
Height & Spread
1m/40 inches tall x 50cm/20 inches
Sow Seeds Cosmos germinates at 16°C-21°C, usually very quick but may take up to 30 days. Sow under cover in spring. Lightly cover with compost or vermiculite. Grow seedlings on then plant out your young plants after the last frosts. Direct sow seed in flowering positions from May onwards when the soil has warmed up. Ammi can also be sown in autumn for bigger plants & earlier flowers next year. Germinates at 15°C in 7 to 21 days.
Thin/Plant Out Both Cosmos and Ammi need plenty of space to develop and grow. Allow about 45cm/18 inches between plants.
Cosmos seedlings transplant well so if you have spare plants you could do what I do and grow a few in large pots to fill any gaps in your planting schemes.
Conditions Required Grow in full sun in moist but well drained soil. Provide support such as pea and bean netting stretched horizontally. When the young plants reach 20cm/8 inches tall pinch out the tips to encourage side shoots to develop.
Flower Production Ammi takes 12 weeks and Cosmos takes around 14 weeks to flower from a spring sowing. Flowers are produced from June until the first frosts in October. Keep cutting and dead heading to produce more flowers.
Picking Cut flowers when it’s cool… early in the morning or in the evening and pop them straight into a tall bucket of fresh water. Blooms will last 7 – 10 days in a vase. Note: Ammi may irritate skin so please wear gloves and long sleeves when handling.
Planting Combinations Cosmos & Ammi grow beautifully together and they combine well with other tall plants such as Scabious, Cleome, Nicotiana and Cornflowers.
