Cosmos 'Sensation' & Ammi majus Seeds

Cosmos Sensation has feathery apple green foliage and large daisy like flowers with petals in all shades of pink from pale pink to deepest carmine plus white. They all have a bold yellow centre which pollinating insects find irresistible.

Cosmos are originally from Mexico and South America where they flower year round. Here in the UK we treat them as annuals sowing the seeds in spring for summer flowers. Cosmos flower all summer long right up until the first frosts. They have become classic English cottage garden plants because they are so easy to grow and super productive

Ammi majus is one of our tallest hardy annuals with long strong stems, lacy white flower heads and dark green feathery foliage. Commonly known as Queen Anne' Lace or Bishop's Weed Ammi is good for adding height to borders, for cut flower production and attracts pollinating insects too. In fact it's such a great plant that the RHS have awarded it the AGM (Award of Garden Merit)

Cosmos Sensation & Ammi are both lovely tall plants growing up to 1m / 3 feet tall so they are brilliant for adding height to your borders or cut flower patch. Cosmos & Ammi flowers are lovely for cut flowers too and they will last well over a week in fresh water. The more flowers you cut the more the plants produce.

These are both amazingly productive plants and what's more our bees and butterflies love Cosmos & Ammi too!

Genus Cosmos bipinnatus 'Sensation Mixed' and Ammi majus
Common Names Mexican Aster and Queen Anne's Lace
Plant Type Annual Flowers & Foliage
Height & Spread
90cm-1.2m/48 inches tall x 50cm/20 inches
Sow Seeds Sow under cover in spring. Grow seedlings on then plant out your young plants after the last frosts. Direct sow seed in flowering positions from May onwards. Cosmos germinates at 16°C-21°C, usually very quick but may take up to 30 days. Ammi is very hardy and can also be sown in autumn for early flowers next year. Germinates at 15°C in 7 to 21 days.
Thin/Plant Out Cosmos & Ammi need plenty of space to develop and grow. Allow 45cm/18 inches between plants. Cosmos seedlings transplant well so you could do what I do and grow a few in large pots to fill any gaps in your planting schemes.
Conditions Required Grow in full sun in moist but well drained soil. Provide support such as pea and bean netting stretched horizontally. When the young plants reach 20cm/8 inches tall pinch out the tips to encourage side shoots to develop.
Flower Production Ammi takes 12 weeks and Cosmos takes around 14 weeks to flower from a spring sowing. Flowers are produced from June until the first frosts in October. Keep cutting and dead heading to encourage more flowers.
Picking Cut flowers when it’s cool. Early in the morning or in the evening is best then pop them straight into a tall bucket of fresh water. Blooms will last 7 – 10 days in a vase.
Planting Combinations Cosmos Sensation and Ammi grow beaiutifully together and they are brilliant with other tall plants such as Cleome, Nicotiana Scabious and Cornflowers.
