Dahlia 'Pompone Mixed’ Seeds

This is a tall Dahlia with pompom shaped flowers. They bloom in all shades of pink from pale pink to cerise, red and burgundy, cream and white plus yellow and orange.

Dahlias are often planted as tubers and that’s brilliant when you need a particular colour or shape for your garden or flower arrangements. If you love Dahlias and just want a good mixture of colours then growing from seed is a great option.

Pompone Mixed grows to at least 60cm/2 feet tall and the plants will need support of some kind to prevent them blowing over in the wind. These perfect globe shaped flowers are good for cutting and lovely for adding to mixed bunches of flowers. Once you discover how easy it is to grow Dahlias from seed you’ll wonder why you didn’t try it before!

Genus Dahlia
Variety Pompone Mixed
Plant Type Treat as Half Hardy Annual (Actually Tender Perennial)
Height & Spread 60-90cm/2-3 feet tall x 45cm/1 foot wide
Sow Seeds Sow indoors in modules in spring. Pot on after 3-4 weeks and grow on until the young plants have a well developed rootball.
Thin/Plant Out Plant out when the soil has warmed up in May allowing 45cm/18 inches between plants.
Conditions Required Dahlias are from South America and like fertile well drained soil, plenty of water and lots of sunshine. Feed each week to encourage flower production and watch out for slugs… they love Dahlias!
Flower Production Usually takes 12 weeks from seed to flower from a spring sowing. Dahlias will flower all summer and well into autumn (July –November) as long as you keep picking the flowers and removing dead heads to prevent your plants setting seed.
Picking Pick flowers when the blooms are almost fully open and remove the lower leaves.
Re-cut their hollow stems under water to remove any airlocks.
Planting Combinations Dahlias grow well with Cosmos, Rudbeckia and Zinnias and other long flowering Half Hardy Annuals
