Eschscholzia californica Seeds

A simple poppy from California with bright upright flowers and feathery foliage.
Flowers open in sun then close when night falls. I recommend making two spring sowings, one in March then again in May for flowers all summer long. Sow again in autumn for early flowers the following year. Californian Poppies are easy to grow, produce masses of flowers and they are perfect for edging paths too.

Genus Eschscholzia californica
Common Name Californian Poppy
Plant Type Hardy Annual
Height & Spread 30cm tall x 20cm wide (12 inches tall x 8 inches)
Sow Seeds Sow outdoors in late summer/autumn for nice strong early flowering plants
Sow again in March, April and May for flowers lasting until late summer.
Thin/Plant Out Eschscholzia dislike root disturbance - it's best to sow them where you want them to flower. Allow 30cm (12 inches) between plants.
Conditions Required When the young Californian Poppies are established they are drought tolerant. They need free draining soil in full sun so sandy soils and gravel gardens are best.
Flower Production Eschscholzia takes ten weeks to flower from a spring sowing.
Flowers in shades of gold and orange produced from May to August.
Picking Pick early in the morning or on a cool evening and stand them
in deep water for a few hours before arranging. Lasts 5 days in a vase.
Planting Combinations Grow Eschscholzia with other drought tolerant plants such as Nigella. Lovely with Gypsophila 'Covent Garden' and brilliant in a vase with blue flowers such as Cerinthe and Salvia viridis.
