August is the month to sow Perennial Flowers that will perform year after year and Biennials for early flowers next year. You can also sow Hardy Annuals this month too.

Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Beaujolais Bonnets'

Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Beaujolais Bonnets' has rich dark burgundy buds and glamorous flowers in shades of wine with white stamens and pink outer petals followed by amazing seed heads.
Slightly shorter than other varieties of annual Scabious, 'Beaujolais Bonnets' is easy to grow and produces masses of flowers for cutting. The more you cut the more you get. Sow outdoors in spring for flowers this summer then sow again in autumn. An autumn sowing will produce early flowers the following year.

Plant Type Hardy Annual (actually a First Year Flowering Perennial often grown as an annual) Cut Flower.
Height & Spread 50-60cm tall x 30cm wide (2 feet tall x 12 inches)
Sow Seeds Sow indoors in early autumn then plant out in 4-6 weeks. Alternatively sow indoors from late February to March. Plant out or sow direct in April/May.
Thin/Plant Out Allow 30cm (12 inches) between plants.
Conditions Required Prefers well drained soil in full sun.
In cold areas may need protection in winter.
Flower Production Glamorous flowers produced from June to October as long as you keep picking. Interesting seed heads form if you let them.
Picking Pick Scabiosa early in the morning and stand them in deep water for a few hours before arranging. Lasts 7 days in a vase.
Planting Combinations Scabiosa is one of the loveliest flowers you can grow for cutting. Beaujolais Bonnets looks great in the garden or a vase with other rich red blooms and lime foliage and flowers such as Bupleurum, Dill and Nicotiana.
