Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Red' Seeds

Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Red' has fascinating dark buds and glamorous deep red pincushion flowers followed by amazing seed heads. Excellent Cut Flower.

It is easy to grow, extremely hardy and produces masses of flowers for cutting. The more you cut the more you get. Sow outdoors in spring for flowers this summer then sow again in autumn. An autumn sowing will produce slightly earlier, taller and sturdier flowers the following year.

Height & Spread 75-90cm tall x 30cm wide (3 feet tall x 12 inches)
Sow Seeds Sow indoors in early autumn then plant out in 4-6 weeks.
Sow indoors in early spring then plant out in May. Sow direct from May onwards.
Thin/Plant Out Allow 30cm (12 inches) between plants.
Conditions Required Prefers well drained soil in full sun.
In cold areas may need protection in winter.
Flower Production Glamorous flowers produced from June to October as long as you keep picking. Interesting seed heads form if you let them.
Picking Pick Scabiosa early in the morning and stand them in deep water for a few hours before arranging. Lasts 7 days in a vase.
Planting Combinations Scabiosa is one of the loveliest flowers you can grow for cutting. Red Scabious blooms look lovely in the garden or a vase with lime green flowers and foliage such as Nicotiana and Molucella and frothy fillers such as Ammi, Daucus 'Dara' and Dill.
