Scabiosa 'Tall Double Mixed' Seeds

Scabiosa atropurpurea 'Tall Double Mixed' is commonly called the Pincushion flower. But there is nothing common about this plant. It has tantalising buds, glamorous double flowers in shades of blue, lilac, pink, crimson and white then when the flowers fade amazing seed heads form. Excellent Cut Flower and lovely filler in mixed bouquets.

What's more Scabiosa is easy to grow and produces masses of flowers for cutting. The more you cut the more you get. Sow outdoors in spring for flowers this summer then sow again in autumn. An autumn sowing will produce early flowers the following year.

Plant Type Hardy Annual (short lived perennial often grown as an annual) Cut Flower/Filler
Height & Spread 90cm tall x 30cm wide (3 feet tall x 12 inches)
Sow Seeds Sow indoors in early autumn then plant out in 4-6 weeks. Alternatively sow indoors from mid February-April. Plant out and sow direct in April/May.
Thin/Plant Out Allow 45cm (18 inches) between plants.
Conditions Required Prefers well drained soil in full sun. Provide support when the plants are young and short before they become too tall to stake easily.
Flower Production Glamorous flowers produced from June to December as long as you keep picking.
Picking Pick Scabiosa early in the morning and stand them in deep water for a few hours before arranging. Lasts 7 days in a vase.
Planting Combinations Scabiosa atropurpurea is one of the loveliest flowers you can grow for cutting. They grow particularly well with other tall plants such as Larkspur and Cornflowers and frothy fillers such as Ammi and Dill.
