Sweet Pea 'Matucana' Seeds

Matucana Sweet Peas are the old-fashioned type with darkly dramatic blooms and a strong scent. Although the individual flower stalks aren’t the longest the plants still easily grow to 1.8 metres / 6 feet tall so they need canes and netting support just like any other Sweet Peas.

They are perfect for cut flowers for the house. You can either cut them with a short stalk for a small vase or cut long stems 45cm/18 inches including blooms, leaves and tendrils for a more informal arrangement. Keep cutting and stems will regrow with even more flowers as long as you carry on watering and feeding.

With intensely rich purple flowers in shades of magenta and purple Matucana is a lovely plant. Sweet Peas are brilliant plants for beginners. They are very easy to grow and super productive giving you masses of flowers for picking.

Grow 2 seedlings to a 1L pot. HOW TO GROW SWEET PEAS
Plant Out Prepare a trellis with canes spaced 20cm apart (8 inches) then plant one pot with two seedlings next to each cane. Tie the stems in as they grow.
Conditions Required Sweet Peas have long roots and need fertile, moist but well drained soil. Like all annuals Sweet Peas prefer a sunny spot. They will also grow in dappled shade. (I always grow my Sweet Peas in the dappled shade of a tree and they do very well.) Water thoroughly in dry spells and feed to keep the flowers going.
Flower Production Buckets of intense purple and magenta flowers are produced from May onwards from an autumn sowing or from July to September if sown in spring.
Picking Pick Sweet Peas early in the morning or in the cool evening and stand them in deep water for a few hours before arranging. Sweet Peas last 5 days in a vase.
Planting Combinations Sweet Peas are some of the best annual climbing flowers that you can grow. You will be amazed at how many flowers are produced. Their climbing habit means that Sweet Pea 'Matucana' grows best with other Sweet Peas. In a vase they are lovely on their own and also great with they look brilliant with lilac Sweet Peas such as Karen Louise and the lime green foliage of Bupleurum and lime green flowers of Zinnia and Nicotiana.
