Country Garden UK is for people who love English Country Gardens and want to know more about creating them and the best plants to choose.
People I meet often ask me about my garden. I try to explain what it’s like and over the years I have found that photos are an effective way of showing seasonal changes and just how quickly gardens can grow and develop. Most of the photos are taken here in my garden in Lancashire, North West England. I love to visit other gardens for inspiration and ideas. I’ll include photos of them and links to their websites whenever possible. I hope they help you too.
Everyone deserves a beautiful garden.
Do you dream of a beautiful garden in the country? There are some people who will tell you that gardening is a complicated business. They say that you need to know about the science of the soil and plants to be successful. This is simply not true. Seeds and plants want to grow. It’s in their nature to thrive and reproduce. All you need to do is choose plants that suit the conditions in your garden and they will grow well. It’s not a struggle to persuade them to grow. It’s easy.
If you are a complete beginner then I hope you feel inspired and encouraged to have a go yourself. You don’t need any special skills or talent to grow lovely plants and you may be thrilled by the speed your new garden develops and starts to attract wildlife.
You may already be an experienced gardener with a mature garden. Perhaps you’d like to make some changes or you’d simply like to see what other people are doing with their gardens.
Whatever your experience, I hope you find something here to surprise and delight you.

I love your flowers, I only have a small garden but your blog has inspired me so much I am going to grow some flowers myself, thank you for sharing your garden. Janice
You don’t need a big space Janice. Our first garden was tiny. I grew sweet peas up the fence and roses up the walls. It’s amazing what you can grow in pots and containers too.

Thank you, I have a question – I would love to be able to cut some flowers for indoors, what would you recommend for a beginner to make a nice display in a vase?
For next year and something very easy I would suggest Salvia viridis… Clary Sage. It comes in a mix of blue (more purple I’d say) pink and white. The actual flowers are tiny but they have coloured bracts at the top of each stem. For this year then Dahlias and Rudbeckias are available in garden centres now. I’m writing a post for next week with my top suggestions for cutting for you with photos of course.

I have discovered so many new things by following and reading gardening blogs and my garden has changed so much and improved because of it. We are all learning all the time aren’t we?
That’s so true Karen. We never stop learning. I think it’s important to remember that YOU are the expert on YOUR GARDEN and not to be overwhelmed by something that seems impossible. There are so many ways to do things in the garden. We can use the internet to see what’s possible and then choose to do whatever fits in with our garden, our family, our values, the time we have available and the lifestyle we would love to cultivate.
I often feel that the garden is like having 10 children under 2! And like small children, they all need attention or often, the plants could die. I have the time at the moment, but even I am amazed at the investment required to create a garden fit for opening. Well worth it though 🙂
