Digitalis 'Foxy' Seeds

This is one of my favourite Foxgloves. Foxy produces spires of flowers in a soft pink, lilac and cream all with speckled throats. It's shorter than most Foxgloves growing to just 75-90cm and each individual flower is upward facing which makes is jolly useful in the garden or as a cut flower in a tall vase. They love sun and dappled shade.

Grow on it’s own in drifts or with other taller Foxgloves to give a range of height and colourful blooms. Foxy can be treated as an annual Foxglove as it will produce flowers just 5 months after sowing.

In the wild Foxgloves are woodland edge plants where they grow in areas with sun and dappled shade. They are perfect for growing in borders, along fences and underneath tall shrubs. Foxgloves add a lovely relaxed feel to a garden and are particularly good for country gardens, wildlife gardens and cottage gardens.

***Please note that all parts of Foxgloves are poisonous and they should be handled with care.***

Genus Digitalis purpurea

Variety Foxy
Plant Type Hardy Biennial (may also be treated as an annual)
Height & Spread 75cm/90 (2.5/3 feet) tall x 30/45cm (12-18inches) spread
Sow Seeds Sow indoors in spring and summer on the surface of fine compost.
Foxgloves need light to germinate so do not cover the tiny seeds.
Foxglove seeds can also be sown direct – scatter the seeds when the soil is warm from the end of May onwards.

Thin/Plant Out Thin out direct sown seedlings to allow plenty of space for the foliage to grow over winter. When seedlings raised indoors are large enough to handle pot up and grow on outdoors until the end of summer. In autumn plant out where you’d like them to flower next year. Allow a minimum of 30cm per plant.
Conditions Required Foxgloves are woodland edge plants and love moist but well drained soil. They prefer part shade with some sunshine. If the site is too shady they will still flower but plants will become leggy and lean towards any available light.
Flower Production Sow this spring for flowering in autumn or sow in late summer/ autumn for flowering next spring. Like many biennials Foxy Foxgloves flower early in the year (May and June) before hardy annuals and perennials come into flower in June. Tall spires of pastel coloured blooms are produced for up to two months.
Picking Cut the main flower when the bottom third is open then lots of smaller spires of flowers will form over the next 6-8 weeks. Place your cut flowers into a tall bucket of warm water and allow to rest overnight before arranging. Make sure you keep the stems upright as tips will bend if you leave the cut flowers at an angle.
Planting Combinations Be generous if you have the space and grow Foxgloves in drifts. They also grow beautifully with other biennials such as Sweet Rocket (Hesperis matronalis) and Honesty (Lunaria annua) which also enjoy the same woodland edge type conditions.
