News July 2021

July is a great time to sow all sorts of flower seeds. This is a great month to sow Biennials such as Forget-me-Nots, Wallflowers and Sweet William for early flowering next Spring. You can carry on sowing Perennials and Wildflowers in July too. You can also sow quick growing Hardy Annuals such as Poppies and some Half Hardy Annuals such as Sunflowers. Get them going now and they’ll go on flowering until the winter cold sets in and the frost arrives.
There are so many lovely flowers to grow now. Do feel free to have a browse if you’d like some inspiration. You’ll find growing information for each flower here in the shop too.

Helichrysum 'King Size Mix' Seeds

Helichysum is a tall hardy annual with long stems of daisy-like strawflowers in all shades of red and copper, rose pink, gold and yellow plus white. It is easy to grow, excellent in the garden and good for cut flower and dried flower production too.

Sow indoors February - March then plant out in May. Sow outdoors in spring (March-May) for summer flowers then sow again in autumn.
An autumn sowing will produce slightly early flowers the following year.

Sow Seeds Sow seeds indoors (18°C) February - March then plant out in May. Sow outdoors in spring (March-May) for summer flowers then sow again in late summer/autumn for earlier flowers next year. Please do not cover... Helichrysum seeds need light to germinate.
Thin/Plant Out Allow 30cm (12 inches) between plants.
Conditions Required Prefers moist but well drained soil in full sun.
Water thoroughly in dry spells.
Flower Production Beautiful long stems of richly coloured flowers produced from July to October.
Picking For cut flowers pick Helichrsum early in the morning and stand them in deep water for a few hours before arranging. Lasts indefinitely in a vase. For dried flowers harvest when just 2 or 3 petals have opened and dry in a dark place to preserve colours.
Planting Combinations Helichrysum is one of the most stunning annual flowers you can grow. These flowers will amaze you with their beauty and long life. If you are growing flowers to dry you may also like Larkspur and Scabiosa.
