April is a busy month in the garden and there are lots of easy to grow flower seeds to choose from. You can help your garden wildlife by growing beautiful open-centred blooms. It’s Spring and at last things are warming up outdoors. Spring sown flowers often bloom in just 8-10 weeks so it’s the perfect time to choose what you’d love to see in your garden this year. Hesperis matronalis 'Purple' Seeds
Hesperis matronalis 'Purple' is a hardy biennial plant with clusters of small purple scented flowers.
Commonly known as Sweet Rocket or Dame’s Violet Hesperis is popular because it’s easy to grow and quite beautiful. A patch of these tall graceful flowers helps to generate the relaxed look of a cottage garden. They make super cut flowers and look especially lovely combined with Foxgloves and Aquilegias.

| Sow Seeds | Sow seeds indoors anytime from May to July at 18 - 21C. Do not cover seeds because they need light to germinate. Alternatively sow direct from June onwards. |
| Thin/Plant Out | Plant well established young plants into their flowering position from the end of August to the end of September. Allow sufficient space (45cm) for the young plants to grow and develop into healthy large plants. During autumn and winter Hesperis produces a good root system and forms a large rosettes of foliage ready for flowering in late spring. |
| Conditions Required | Hesperis will grow in most garden situations ranging from full sun to shade. Please note that they usually become leggy and need staking in very shady conditions. The perfect spot is a woodland edge situation with dappled shade and sun. They prefer moist but well drained soil. Hesperis will self seed if you leave some of the long thin seed heads on the plant after flowering has finished. |
| Flower Production | Hesperis flowers from May until July one year after sowing. I suggest that you grow plenty because their early flowers fill the gap after Tulips have finished flowering. Usually flowers are produced for a good two months. |
| Picking | Pick in the cool of the early morning or evening when the top few flowers are open. Lasts 5 to 7 days as a cut flower. |
| Planting Combinations | Hesperis enjoys similar woodland edge type conditions to Foxgloves and Aquilegias. Luckily they all look beautiful growing together. If you want a good show of early blooms and lots of flowers for cutting then plant the three of them in drifts. |
