Looking Good 26th February

The sun is shining and the birds are singing this morning here in North West England. It’s a glorious day! I’m potting up some spring bulbs which are just beginning to flower. In my box there are Hyacinths, Crocus and Anemones.

Hyacinths come in some gorgeous colours in shades of blue, pink and white. I particularly love the Lilac.

My potting bench is on the deck of my garden studio so it’s quite sheltered and enjoyable to work there even on a rainy day. Usually I’m surrounded by birds. It’s surprising how they tolerate humans being around. We have attached nest boxes to trees and to my garden studio and they are used every year by Sparrows, Blue Tits and Great Tits for raising their families. A robin nested underneath my potting bench last spring in one of my unused containers. I managed to catch a glimpse of the chicks too.

A kind friend has just made a few more nest boxes for me to put up for this season… well eight to be exact! So that’s my job for the weekend. I’ll be painting them and choosing the best spots and hopefully we’ll have a few more little families in the garden this year.

Spring is just around the corner. Woo Hoo!

  4. Those are amazing photos of the baby robins. How lovely to have them in your garden. Spring hasn’t quite made it this far north just yet. We are still suffering from frosts and frozen ground. A few spring bulbs are flowering, but it still feels very much like winter.

    1. Hi Annette. It amazes me that the wildlife huddles as close to humans as they can get… probably for the warmth and food I think! We’ve been having light frosts in the mornings this week too with lovely sunny afternoons. I hope you get a spot of warmth soon!

  5. I’m trying to wait patiently for spring. It’s been such a mild winter here, but I keep thinking we’re going to have a huge blizzard. I loved looking at your spring photos they help brighten our gray/white world right now.

  6. Your previous robin chicks are gorgeous Gillian, I hope they visit again, we have had robins nest in our potting shed too, but I wasn’t lucky enough to see the chicks. Lovely post.

    1. Thanks very much Julie. It’s quite something to have wild birds nesting nearby isn’t it? I found a ducks nest from last year under a big clump of grass I cut back in our front garden yesterday less than two metres from our front door!

    1. I do like Hyacinths and all spring bulbs really. I think after so long wishing for spring any fresh blooms are much appreciated!

    1. Thanks Cathy. It’s true that afternoons feel like spring until about 4pm then there’s a distinct wintery feel again!

  13. How great do they look?! And eight new nesting boxes. Exciting. You’ll have to take pictures of them when painting is all done and they are up in place

    1. Thanks very much! And yes I am so lucky I know. We already have quite a few boxes around the garden… I just paint them the same colour as my garden studio which is a nice soft chalky green. It seems to blend in well with all the trees/foliage. These boxes are quite posh with hinged lids for easy cleaning and even a little perch outside the entrance hole which may mean that I’ll get some good views and pictures of any new residents. Will definitely write a post about them once we have any news.
