Early blossom is welcome in the country garden… or in any garden come to think of it! In our garden we have fruit trees which flower in April and May but right now that seems like a long time off, especially since a couple of beautiful really early flowering trees have just caught my eye.
You can’t have a country garden without spring bulbs. Early flowering bulbs make my heart sing. In autumn I planted lots more daffodils and tulips. I chose them carefully to spread the flowering time throughout spring.
Over the years I’ve learned that some plants in my garden can be cut back hard in autumn. Their stems collapse and they add no colour or structure to the winter border. The best thing to do is cut them back and compost their wilting stems and leaves. But some plants are well worth hanging on to…
We had a terrific downpour of rain this morning. It broke off some of the more twiggy rose stems in the Summer Border. There are plenty of buds on the shrubs so it’s not a problem… besides I now have lots of flowers for the house.
A very kind lady has given me a chair for my studio. She apologised because the fabric has faded in the sun. I think it’s just perfect… especially with a vase of Lilac blossom and Snowballs. (Viburnum opulus ‘Sterile’)
As soon as I saw this lovely little pot I imagined what it would look like with a tiny white Viola cascading over the side. Beautiful.

Before launching into my blog… I thought I should explain where I live and why I garden.
Where I live is easy. I live in a small village in the county of Lancashire in North West England. It’s an area known as the Fylde, a flood plain for two rivers, the Wyre and the Ribble. Luckily for us, the house sits on top of a hill so we have good views across Morecambe Bay to the mountains on the southern edge of the Lake District and to the east we have the rolling hills of the Forest of Bowland.
