We are well and truly into autumn now here in North West England.
Many things are changing in our gardens and in the wider landscape too as shorter days and cooler nights creep in. Some of our trees are beginning to change colour as their leaves lose their green pigment and vibrant shades of pink, gold and red burst into sight.
Apples are Looking Good this week in our garden.
Bramley apples are usually picked and sold when green. We don’t pick ours until we need them. They are ready to use from about September onwards so that’s when we start to pick and use them in the kitchen. We like apple pies, apple crumble and today we had Apple Cake.
This is a tall pink Michaelmas Daisy called Harrington’s Pink. It’s a New England Aster and they are well known for producing large colourful flowers on sturdy woody stems. They are also resistant to mildew which other Asters are prone to.
There’s nothing subtle about this plant. It’s tall growing to around five feet or so. The flowers and all the insects that love these nectar rich plants are right in your face. Which is brilliant for taking pictures… no bending or crouching required!
It’s officially autumn now and the garden is just beginning to slip it’s golden coat on.
Our days are shorter and much cooler now and it’s dark when we get up in the morning!
It’s windy and huge rafts of grey clouds have been pelting rain at anything in their path.
We know what’s coming but it’s still a shock after the mild months of summer.
